Museveni appoints Executive Director, DR Chris Mukiza for new term as UBOS boss ahead of 2024 Census

President Yoweri Museveni has renewed the contract of Dr Chris Mukiza as Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Executive Director for yet another five-year term as the country gears up for the upcoming National Housing and Population Census 2024.

Dr Mukiza, first appointed Executive Director on March 30, 2019, had his initial five-year contract ending this month on March 31, 2024, before President Museveni handed him another term at the helm of the country’s statistics body.

Ubos in a statement earlier this week confirmed the reappointment of Mukiza as the Executive Director at Statistics House, expressing a vote of confidence shown in him by the government to lead the body for yet another five years.

“The Board, Management and Staff of Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) congratulate the Executive Director Chris Ndatira Mukiza (PhD) on his well-deserved reappointment for another 5 years as the Executive Director of Uganda Bureau of Statistics which appointment keeps him as the Chief Statistician of the Country,” the statement issued Tuesday, March 19, read in part.

“This reappointment is a testament of faith, confidence, and support that Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, Hon. Matia Kasaija, the Minister of Finance Planning and Economic Development and the Board of Uganda Bureau of Statistics have bestowed upon you,” it added.

“This further showcases your exemplary, visionary, and transformational leadership that has produced remarkable accomplishments for the Bureau during the past 5-year term. We are confident that the next 5 years of your leadership will place the Bureau to the standard of a World Class National Statistics Office.”

DailyExpress understands that President Museveni signed Dr Mukiza’s new contract on January 18, 2024, meaning he will continue running the bureau until January 18, 2029, unless otherwise.

Dr Mukiza is the third Executive Director of UBOS, having replaced Ben Paul Mungyereza who left the Bureau service at the end of August 2018.

Before assuming the ED role, Dr Mukiza served at Statistics House as the Director of macroeconomic statistics from 2010 till 2019.

He was also Director in the Executive Director’s Office in 2008-09 and as a Principal Statistician from 2000 to 2007.

Dr Mukiza holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton, a Master’s degree in Economics from Makerere University and a Bachelor of Statistics degree from Makerere University.

The development comes at the time when Ubos is conducting preparations for the implementation of the enumeration exercise of the National Population and Housing Census (NPHC) 2024 from May 10 to May 19 with May 9 as census night.

Uganda last conducted the National Population and Housing Census was conducted in 2014. This will be the first census to use digital technology to collect and process data.
